There are many types of snakes, and they come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Some are harmless, and others can be venomous, but all of them play important roles in nature.
Here are a few common types of snakes you might have heard of:
- Pythons – Big, powerful snakes that squeeze their prey instead of using venom. They’re non-venomous and can grow really large!
- Cobras – Known for their hood and dramatic appearance. Some cobras can even spit venom!
- Vipers – These snakes usually have a thick body and a triangle-shaped head. Many vipers are venomous.
- Boa constrictors – Like pythons, they use their strength to wrap around prey. Boas are found mostly in the Americas.
- Garter snakes – Small, harmless snakes often found in gardens and near water in North America.
- No legs (obviously!)
- Long, flexible bodies
- Forked tongues they use to "smell" the air
- Shedding their skin as they grow
- Cold-blooded, so they need warmth from the sun
