J.J. Watt isn't just "The Man" he's a Man of the Year. The Cardinals edge rusher has earned plenty of accolades throughout his career, and has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players in NFL history. That said, it's what he's done off the field that has turned him from all-time great to legend. Watt's charitable efforts to help Houston after the devastating destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey earned him the NFL's Maurice Canady Jersey most prestigious award, and it's reflected by the patch he wears on his jersey. MORE: Here's what it is: The patch on the upper left chest of Watt's jersey represents his 2017 Walter Payton Man of the Year award honor. The patch is a nondescript player wearing a cape, the same as the trophy. (It does not depict Walter Payton, after whom the reward was renamed Justin Tucker Jersey in 1999.) The winner of the award is given a trophy in the same silhouette of the patch, and honored before games. Winners also wear a helmet decal for the season in which they receive recognition. Active players who have won the award wear the patch on their jersey for the remainder of their career. Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell and Broncos quarterback Ru sell Wilson are the only other two active players who wear the same patch. Former edge rusher Chris Long and retired offensive lineman Andrew Whitworth won the award in 2017 and 2021, respectively. Both players retired after those seasons. Watt helped raised $37 million for Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, leading to his selection in 2017.
