  • What are most common challenges, implementing NFPA 35 in modern manufacturing?

Implementing NFPA 35 in modern coating manufacturing facilities presents several compliance challenges, particularly due to the complexity of processes and the evolving nature of industrial technology. One of the most common issues is adequate ventilation and vapor control. Ensuring proper airflow to prevent the accumulation of flammable vapors requires precise engineering and frequent maintenance, especially in aging facilities or those with customized production lines.

Another challenge is ensuring proper classification of hazardous areas and selecting equipment that meets explosion-proof or intrinsically safe standards. Many facilities struggle to keep electrical systems up to date with these classifications, especially when modifications or expansions occur without proper hazard re-evaluation.

Housekeeping and solvent management also remain significant concerns. NFPA 35 mandates strict control over flammable liquids, including proper storage, transfer, and disposal. However, in high-volume operations, ensuring every shift adheres to these protocols consistently can be difficult.

Finally, integration of automation and modern control systems introduces new risks. While automation can improve safety, it can also create blind spots if systems are not properly configured or maintained according to NFPA 35 requirements. Maintaining documentation and proving compliance during inspections can also be resource-intensive.
