  • VoIP Firewall vs SBC – Do You Need Both for Secure Communication?

    Hi everyone,

With VoIP becoming the backbone of business communication, security has become a top concern. Cyber threats like toll fraud, SIP scanning, and DDoS attacks are real risks for any organization using IP telephony.

That’s where VoIP Firewalls and Session Border Controllers (SBCs) come into play.

    VoIP Firewall:
    • Designed specifically to protect VoIP traffic.
    • Blocks unauthorized SIP requests and malicious traffic.
    • Helps prevent toll fraud and keeps VoIP traffic clean.

    Session Border Controller (SBC):
    • Does everything a VoIP firewall does and more.
    • Manages SIP sessions, handles NAT traversal, ensures call quality (QoS), and provides interoperability between different VoIP systems.
    • Adds advanced routing, failover, and encryption for end-to-end communication.

    Do you need both?
Many businesses use a VoIP firewall for basic security and an SBC for advanced protection + call management. If you’re scaling up or dealing with multiple carriers, an SBC becomes almost essential.

    Discussion:
    • Are you using just a VoIP firewall or an SBC (or both)?
    • Did adding an SBC improve call quality and security?
    • Any recommendations for reliable solutions?

Would love to hear your experiences!
